Topical retinoids/retinols are effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles by boosting collagen production and stimulating the formation of new blood vessels in the skin.
However, patients planning to do laser or energy-based treatments should generally avoid using retinol before and after their treatment. Retinol/Retinoids can increase skin sensitivity and make the skin more delicate, leading to complications such as irritation, inflammation, and a higher risk of burning.
Before treatment:
Retinol can make the skin more sensitive to light and can also affect the effectiveness of the laser treatment. It is often recommended to stop using retinol and other topical skincare products, especially those containing acids or benzoyl peroxide, up to 10 days before laser treatment.
After treatment:
Post-treatment, the skin is more vulnerable, and retinol could cause irritation or impede the healing process. It is generally advised to wait until the treated area has completely healed before resuming the use of retinol-based products.
