Lip Flip vs. Lip Filler: Which Treatment Is Right for You?

SCROLL

Lip enhancement is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments. Both lip filler and a lip flip can create changes. However it is important to understand the differences so that you can decide which treatment best suits your goals.

What Is a Lip Flip?

A lip flip involves injecting a neuromodulator (Botox, Dysport, etc.) into the upper orbicularis oris muscle which typically curls the lips downward. Although it does not add volume to the lips, by gently flipping the lip upward, this creates the appearance of a fuller lip.

Benefits of a Lip Flip:

  • Ideal for patients who want a subtle enhancement.
  • Smooths smoker’s lines around the lips
  • Reduce the appearance of a “gummy smile”
  • Quick treatment with almost no downtime.
  • Results typically last up to three months.

What Is Lip Filler?

Lip fillers use injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) (Restylane Kysse, Juvederm Volbella) which is a naturally occurring substance in the body that retains moisture.  By injecting dermal filler it can add shape, structure, and volume to the lips.

Benefits of Lip Filler:

  • Ideal for patients who want lasting results with more volume and definition.
  • Improve asymmetry and  balances proportions
  • Defines the Cupid’s bow and borders
  • Hydrates and smooths the lips
  • Results typically last up to 6–12 months

Can You Combine Both?

It is possible to combine both a lip flip and lip filler. Consult with your provider to discuss aesthetic goals .

Which Option Is Right for You?

A  consultation with your provider will determine the best treatment plan for your lip shape and goals:

  • If you want a subtle lift or correction of a gummy smile, start with a lip flip.
  • If you’re looking for more volume, symmetry, and definition, lip filler may be the better choice.
